Turning the tables: Maxwell, Toby and George await orders at the Community Café at Farnley Tyas Church

Visitors to our Tuesday Community Cafe are accustomed to fine coffee and cakes – but not to table service by three handsome young waiters.

So it was a pleasant surprise to have freshly-ground coffee, tea and a selection of cakes brought to the tables today by three boys from the village, Toby McKinnell, George Sawyer and Maxwell Shelton.

The trio of friends are working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and, as part of their programme of activities, they chose to help serve food and drinks to appreciative customers.

Demonstrating the fragility of the proverb 'you can't have your cake and eat it', the three managed to consume a fair amount of the delicious fruit cake that had been made by a member of the village Women's Institute.

Four groups take it in turns to run the weekly community cafe – Farnley Tyas school parents, the Community Group, church members and the WI – and credit for the quality of the catering went  this week to the WI.

One visitor said: "There's always a great atmosphere at the cafe but these lively lads brought extra humour and sparkle today by carrying out their tasks with such charm and fun. Good luck to them with their awards – and we hope to see them again."

Funds raised by the cafe go towards the St Lucius' Development Appeal.
