Inspiring, entertaining concert by Gordon Stewart

Organist Gordon Stewart in Farnley Tyas Church during his October 2019 concert.
More than 60 people gathered in St Lucius' to hear a Sunday afternoon concert by Gordon Stewart, full of life and humour.

It takes a special ear to conjure memorable colours from a modest two-manual village organ, installed in 1911 by the Huddersfield organ builder Peter Conacher.

But, as Gordon remarked, we are fortunate to have a fine example of Conacher's work and every stop was carefully explored in an absorbing programme that ranged from Bach, via Elgar and Ketelby, to the contemporary American composer, Aaron Shows.

This was the third concert to be given in Farnley by the Kirklees Borough Organist and his stories were as fresh and funny as always. The audience needed no second invitation to cheer his playing the rafters and to be rewarded by an encore.

And afterwards, tea and superior cakes served our Savoy-trained team.

So, in all, an inspiring, entertaining afternoon which raised £400 towards the development appeal and which brought many people in the village together.

Quite a weekend.
